AMSTERDAM - Owner Ahold says it was misled by Scientology regarding the content of the exhibition in the building at the De Clerqstraat, which explicitly was announced as an exhibition against drugs. This description is also stated in the rental agreement. The exposition now turns out to be titled, "What is Scientology," and is concentrated on the teachings of Scientology and the sale of books and courses.

Ahold has rented its space to the Scientology movement for the month of November, and has subsequently asked the burrough's governing body for an exemption to the zoning plan, so that Scientology could open its exhibition.

This request came just one week before the movement occupied the commercial space. Too late to adjust the zoning plan, judged burrough leader Hans Weevers, who subsequently decided to tolerate [the Dutch word is 'gedogen' which indicates something that is not allowed by law, but which is - for one reason or another - tolerated] the exhibition.

Ahold denies that she has requested permits or exemptions on behalf of Scientology. A spokesman says the contract explicitly states that organization itself would take care of this.

The fight agains drugs is an important part of Scientology's teachings. That said, Scientology's opinion regarding the damaging results of drugs use and on how drugs are to be combatted differ quite a bit from the policy of the Netherlands.

Yesterday questions were asked in the commission meeting of the Oud-West (Old- West) burrough's governing body regarding the tolerating of the exhibition and the inviting of minors.

Already last week questions were asked in response to complaints from the neighborhood, but according to VVD-fraction leader Robert Flos yesterday's report in Het Parool [regarding Scientology's violation of its agreement not to go after minors] gave reason for further questions.

Weevers confirms that he had tolerated the exhibition. According to the burrough's leaders, the reason is that prohibiting the exhibition would cost more time and money. However, he promises to urge police to take further messures. Weevers says the Scientology has repeated violated agreement made with him and that the exhibition clearly has caused more nuisance that was foreseen.

The police has indicated that it is very difficult to find legal grounds on which to deal with the exhibition, but that it plans to keep a sharp eye on the situation. "Unfortunately we can not keep a 24-hour watch in front on the place."

AMSTERDAM - Eigenaar Ahold zegt door Scientology te zijn misleid over de inhoud van de tentoonstelling in het pand aan de De Clercqstraat, die uitdrukkelijk als een tentoonstelling tegen drugs werd aangekondigd. Deze omschrijving staat ook in het huurcontract. De expositie blijkt nu Wat is Scientology te heten en is geconcentreerd op het gedachtegoed van Scientology en de verkoop van boeken en cursussen.

Ahold heeft de Scientology-beweging haar pand voor de maand november verhuurd en heeft vervolgens aan de deelraad van Oud-West om ontheffing van het bestemmingsplan gevraagd, zodat Scientology daar een tentoonstelling kon openen. De aanvraag kwam slechts een week voordat de beweging in de winkelruimte trok. Te laat om het bestemmingsplan nog te kunnen aanpassen, oordeelde stadsdeelbestuurder Hans Weevers, die vervolgens besloot de tentoonstelling te gedogen.

Ahold ontkent dat zij namens Scientology aanvragen voor vergunningen of ontheffingen heeft gedaaan. Een woordvoerster laat weten dat in het contract uitdrukkelijk staat dat de organisatie daar zelf zorg voor draagt.

De bestrijding van drugs is wel een belangrijk onderdeel van het gedachtegoed van Scientology. Overigens verschilt de mening van Scientology over wat de schadelijke gevolgen van drugs zijn en hoe drugs bestreden kunnen worden nogal van het beleid in Nederland.

Gisteravond zijn er in de commissievergadering van de deelraad Oud-West vragen gesteld over het gedogen van de campagne en het binnenvragen van minderjarigen.

Vorige week waren er naar aanleiding van klachten uit de buurt al vragen gesteld, maar volgens VVD-fractievoorzitter Robert Flos was er naar aanleiding van de publicatie gisteren in Het Parool aanleiding voor verdere vragen. Weevers bevestigt dat hij de tentoonstelling heeft gedoogd. De reden daarvoor is volgens het bestuur van het stadsdeel dat het tegenhouden van de tentoonstelling meer tijd en geld zou kosten. Wel zegt hij toe bij de politie aan te dringen op verdere maatregelen. Weevers zegt dat Scientology bij herhaling afspraken die met hem zijn gemaakt heeft geschonden en dat de tentoonstelling duidelijk voor veel meer overlast heeft gezorgd dan was voorzien.

De politie laat weten dat het heel erg lastig is juridische handvatten te vinden om de tentoonstelling aan te pakken, maar is wel van plan scherp te blijven toezien. ''Helaaas kunnen wij hier niet 24 uur per dag voor de deur posten.'' De Groenen hebben in de commissievergadering van de deelraad vragen gesteld over het binnenvragen van jongeren en het veroorzaken van overlast.
